I am sure most of you reading this have heard something like the title of this article. There is even a famous book from Nicolas Windpassinger about the impact of the Internet of Things on our businesses and private life. However, right now I am not focusing on exciting things like IoT, I am talking about the simple fact that in times of pandemics and lockdowns companies finally realized that embracing the digital economy is the only chance to survive.
I really believe this to be true. And no, meeting online using some conferencing tool or conducting webinars instead of organizing a real event is not digitizing your business.
So, what does ‘Digital’ mean? Digital is not just using some digital tools, digital devices or doing a little bit of digital marketing and sales. Digital is the ability to communicate instantly, connect everything and everybody independent of location, measure and archive everything and analyze enormous amounts of data in the blink of an eye. This creates business opportunities never seen before, but also prevents a major threat to every business who refuses or is not able to keep up.
This results in the ‘digitize or die’ situation all of us are facing. Of course, it’s easy to say this, but what about the how? What are organizations supposed to do, where should they start? Is digital transformation the same as innovation? What are the concrete steps that need to be taken and where can they get help?
On the other hand, what are we going to do with all the people that lost or are losing their jobs because they or their companies have not been prepared? And what will we tell all the young people who worked hard to finish their studies and now find themselves in a world where their skills have already fallen behind.
You shouldn’t waste your time waiting for the government or education system to solve the problem. No matter where you are on this planet, the public education system is overwhelmed with this challenge. I am always blown away when I am talking to business leaders and a lot of them, particularly in Europe, are still thinking the government is to blame because they need to come up with a solution. And who exactly is the government? You think they know better than you do?
If you don’t digitize, you’re doomed. If you do not take care of your own destiny you will be left behind. As a company, have you ever calculated how much money you’re losing and how much business you’re not able to acquire because you can’t get started with or complete your digital transformation projects? As an individual looking for an opportunity, what about counting your losses and move on?
We all need to invest into our well-being and into our future. Invest some money, invest some time, invest focus and desire.
As a company, you need digital experts and you know it. But you cannot simply advertise some jobs and get tons of applications. Sometimes you don’t even get a single application. I am not claiming that I have the ultimate and only solution to the problem. But I have a suggestion. Please try to calculate what it will mean if you are not competitive in a digital world. And once you have at least a vague answer, maybe you will realize that investing some money into your workforce makes a lot of sense. Do not wait for the government to solve the problem, it will not happen.
As an individual, please consider that investing time and focus into education related to the ‘digital’ landscape opens a lot of opportunities and can make the difference for you and your family.
